Unconventional Loom: Community Weaving Project

The Unconventional Loom weaving project was a community project with the goal of bringing the weaving and making practices of the RISD Textiles Department out into the community of Providence, RI. A warp was strung across one of the gates by the Providence river and passersby were encouraged to stop and weave into it, contributing to the large tapestry. All materials used were remnants from student projects or loom waste from the school’s industrial Jacquard loom.

Thanks to all the students and faculty of the RISD Textiles Department who helped organize this project. All photo and video documentation is by Daniel Xue.
